Wine Tasting
Join us at Bar Douro City on Saturday 16th May for a special afternoon wine tasting hosted by Frederico and Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno of Quinta das Bágeiras, one of Portugal’s most respected and characterful estate producers.
Located in the Bairrada region, Quinta das Bágeiras is renowned for wines that express both place and tradition. The region’s Atlantic influence, cooling ocean breezes, and distinctive chalky clay soils play a vital role in shaping Bágeiras’ wines, from their outstanding traditional-method espumantes to finely structured white wines and deeply expressive Baga reds.
Quinta das Bágeiras was founded in 1989, when Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno chose a different path from previous generations of his family. Rather than selling grapes or wine to the local co-operative or négociants, he committed to bottling wines under his own name, becoming a true vigneron. At a time when many producers were chasing international markets with international grape varieties, including French grapes approved for Bairrada DOC wines in 2003 - Nuno remained steadfast in his belief that “quality means nothing without identity.”
Although deeply passionate about Champagne and a regular visitor to the region, Nuno has always championed Bairrada’s native varieties, both for sparkling and still wines. This commitment has established Quinta das Bágeiras as one of the region’s most prestigious estate-bottlers and a benchmark for authenticity in Portuguese wine.
This tasting offers a rare opportunity to explore the wines of Quinta das Bágeiras with the people behind them, and to gain insight into one of Portugal’s most distinctive wine regions.
The tasting will run from 4pm - 5pm.
Tickets are £35, including five 50ml tasters and a selection of Bar Douro petiscos.
